Desirae Barragan (Gabrieleno Band of Mission Indians of Southern California) Post Bacc (Gap Year)
As a proud Gabrieleno woman, Desirae draws from a heritage of matriarchs, healers, and strong family ties. With dual Bachelor’s degrees in Human Biology and Society and American Indian Studies from UCLA, she’s weaving together Western medicine and traditional practices on her journey to becoming the first physician in her Tribe.
Desirae’s commitment to healthcare goes beyond medicine—she’s passionate about earning the trust of her patients, honoring cultural beliefs, promoting food sovereignty, and enhancing the representation of California Native peoples in the field of Medicine. Currently in her gap year, Desirae is attending Cal Poly Humboldt and UC Davis School of Medicine.
Desirae is dedicated to increasing the visibility of California Native people in medicine and healthcare settings, both urban and rural. She envisions clinics that celebrate local artists, incorporate traditional foods, and revitalize Native languages, transforming healthcare spaces into reflections of California Native heritage. Through her social media platform @thenativepremed, she plans to highlight California Native providers, clinics, community leaders, youth, and elders, creating a vibrant and welcoming healthcare environment that fosters trust and cultural pride.
Desirae’s ultimate goal? To empower California Native youth to see themselves in the medical field while working alongside Tribal leaders and community members to develop culturally relevant healthcare solutions. We’re excited to support her mission to create a future where healthcare honors the rich history and identity of California’s Native communities.
