We interviewed Native health professional leaders to hear their journeys. This experience has strengthened our relationships with one another and continues to empower Native voices.

Lindsey Montileaux Mabbutt DDS, MPH. (Oglala Lakota) – Swinomish Dental Clinic

“My parents had not graduated from college and so it can be really hard to find your path when you’re experiencing college for the first time and your family isn’t able to give you their experiences,” explains Lindsey Montileaux DDS, MPH (Oglala Lakota).

Jared Delaney (Klamath tribes) – Native Medical Student

“I always told myself, I’m going to be a doctor! I think it’s really good for my cousins and other people where I come from to see that we can accomplish these sorts of things, because minorities don’t see themselves when they look at education,” said Jared Delaney (Klamath tribes).

Shandee Dixon (Apache) Microbiologist

“I really wanted to build awareness around health inequities, bringing that perspective into the work that I do enables me to change the way we think about science, to change the way we think about medicine,” says Shandee Dixon (Apache) Microbiologist.

Joe “Awan” Martineau (Minnesota Chippewa Tribe, Fond Du Lac Band) Addiction Alcohol & Drug Counselor/Spirit Adviser

“I really wanted to make a difference in other people’s lives to give back some of those miracles that I finally found,” he said of his chosen career as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor.
