Heleana Biller (Quinault) undergrad junior

Helaena Biller, a proud citizen of the Quinault Indian Nation with Filipino heritage, is embarking on a journey to merge her passion for healthcare and community service into a rewarding career. Currently pursuing prerequisites for a Bachelor of Nursing Science program at Tacoma Community College, Helaena is dedicated to laying the foundation for her dream of becoming a Labor & Delivery nurse. With a long-term goal of advancing her career to become a midwife, she is committed to making a meaningful impact in maternal healthcare. Helaena's dedication to public health and community service was evident during her tenure as a Public Health Intern at the Urban Indian Health Institute, where she actively engaged in initiatives benefiting urban AI/AN elders and youth. Her involvement in community-driven events such as Back-2-School drives and Toys 4 Tots reflects her commitment to improving the well-being of her community. Currently serving as a Youth Advocate at a Seattle-based Native non-profit organization, Helaena continues to contribute to the empowerment of Indigenous youth. Beyond her professional pursuits, Helaena finds solace in reading, beading, and cherishing moments with loved ones. Her diverse experiences have fueled her desire to inspire Indigenous youth through her educational and healthcare journey.

“I expect to learn more about myself through this project, and I believe that these results can help other Indigenous students show that anything is possible.”

From Uncertainty to Empowerment: Helaena’s Journey to Inspire Indigenous Youth in Healthcare

Helaena's project aims to document and share her educational journey to inspire Indigenous youth. Starting her academic career at Western Washington University without a clear direction, financial constraints forced her to reevaluate her path. After moving back home and enrolling in Tacoma Community College's Registered Nursing program, Helaena found her calling in healthcare.

Through her project presentation, Helaena intends to reflect on her experiences, challenges, and triumphs throughout her educational journey. By sharing her story, she hopes to encourage Indigenous youth facing similar uncertainties to pursue their dreams despite obstacles. Helaena's project embodies resilience, determination, and a commitment to empowering her community, making her a beacon of inspiration for future generations.
