Jasmine Fernandez (Pascua Yaqui) Third Year Medical Student

Jasmine (she/her) is a third-year medical student at Oregon Health and Science University. Originally hailing from the Bay Area of California, her early curiosity for medicine began when her brother was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. She was inspired by the strong matriarchal figures in her life who always urged her to advocate and champion change for inequities within healthcare and beyond. She graduated from the University of Portland with a degree in Biology and was a Wy’east Post Baccalaureate scholar. Her desire to apply to medical school was further strengthened through mentorship from Native doctors and public health professionals. She is passionate about dismantling structural inequities within healthcare and mentoring the next wave of Native health leaders. She is interested in pursuing emergency medicine and hopes to bolster Native voices within medicine and academia. Her hobbies include trips to the coast, playing soccer, and looking for new restaurants around PDX.

“The advancement of Native health professionals is crucial for providing equitable health care systems, and the visibility of AIAN medical doctors also matters for inspiring future Native health professionals.”
