Mackenzie Savage (Cherokee Nation - Tahlequah) Medical Student
Mackenzie Savage, a medical student and former EMT, has always been drawn to medicine. Her experience in emergency medical services (EMS) confirmed her passion for helping others through high-stakes, life-saving care. Now pursuing a career in emergency medicine or trauma surgery, she envisions serving in rural or underserved communities, where she can build trust and provide compassionate care to those who need it most.
A first-generation physician, Mackenzie is committed to uplifting Native students who dream of working in healthcare. For her cohort project, she will return to her home tribe in Tahlequah, OK, collaborating with her ANAMS chapter to mentor Native high school and college students. Through engaging presentations, hands-on activities, and open discussions, she will demystify the path to medical school and offer guidance on how to become a competitive applicant. By also speaking with school advisors, she hopes to improve institutional support for Native students pursuing careers in medicine.
Mackenzie’s project is rooted in the belief that Native students belong in medicine and deserve to see themselves in professional, high-impact careers. By sharing her journey and offering mentorship, she hopes to raise morale, spark confidence, and ensure more Native students see a future for themselves in healthcare.
When she’s not in school, Mackenzie enjoys reading, running, spending time with family, and coaching softball, continuing her love for the sport she played in college.
